Happy New More Music Year
Posted by Sandra Wood on 20 September 2019
It might seem a bit premature to be wishing you Happy New Year just after summer, but the new term start here at More Music is really the beginning of our year. We’re launching in to a new season with the theme ‘Northern Lights’.
Welcome to a wonderful programme of events at the More Music base, across the district and regionally. With inspiration and artists from the North of England to the Nordic Countries, this is music that brings a breath of fresh air and lights up the dark days.
We have an amazing children’s music residency Cinclus Cinclus featuring Norwegian jazz star Terje Isungset to set the tone. He’ll be working with schools, and leading a workshop and show. I’ve long been a fan and it’s very exciting to bring a leading international artist like this to Morecambe.
Northern women will be sharing compelling folk song with featured artist Rowan Rheingans bringing her award winning piece ‘Dispatches on the Red Dress’ and the thrilling She Shanties collective. Scandinavian influenced folk-rock BAAB promise to bring pulsing rhythms perfect for traditional dances, and mythical beasts…
There’s plenty of illumination in the autumn and winter months, with the ever popular Lantern Festival on Saturday 26th October and a special outing of family show Magic Islands in Space for Light Up Lancaster.
There are numerous opportunities to take part – singing workshops, music sessions, debate, conferences and activities whatever your age. I’ll be leading a ‘Songs of the Northern Lights’ With One Voice workshop exploring songs from Scandinavia and ballads from the Baltics.
All in all it’s a taste of what it means to be northern now – rooted in tradition, but looking to the future. Aware of the landscape and nature around us. Open hearted and adventurous. And some great tunes. So, cheers for the New Year once more.
